Gamestar Mechanic is one of the coolest sites for learning game programming I’ve found. Kids start off by playing a video game. As they progress through missions and quests, they acquire the skills to program their own game in their workshop (no coding necessary). Then, they can publish their game for other kids to play. It’s written for 7-14 year olds. You can try the first quest for free and it will take you through the steps of creating and publishing your first game. For a one-time fee of $19.95, there are two more quests that go deeper into making a game. There are add-ons available and even online courses with real game designers (for $299) if your student is really into it. It’s certainly worth test-driving with the free first quest. The site has tons of information for parents and teachers if you want to learn more.
